This was while China was ruled by the Nationalist Government under Chiang Kai-shek, two years before The Long March.

1948

At the height of the civil war, one year before the Communist victory. Liuzhou had been all but destroyed by the Japanese in 1945.

1958

The beginning of "The Great Leap Forward"

The beginning of the Cultural Revolution

Between 1970 and 1974

This is undated, but from internal evidence appears to be between the dates given. Certainly, during the Cultural Revolution, Liuzhou was the scene of bitter fighting between rival groups of Red Guards.

One year before Mao's death and the end of the Cultural Revolution.
