Bars and Cafés

I'm not a bar person! Problem is, I like beer. Over-priced bad beer doesn't turn me on. I mean, Sol! What is that? So, I don't know most of the bars in town. If you have a favourite bar, let me know about it. I'll include it here.

Cafés are a better bet. (And most will do you a beer, too). In the last few years there has been a big fashion for drinking coffee. Coffee places have sprung up (and just as quickly disappeared) all over town. These vary enormously in size, ambiance and especially, in coffee quality. If you have any favourites, for whatever reason, the again please let me know. I can't visit them all myself.

Goka Coffee

Goka Coffee

It is several years since the local government ripped the soul out of the city centre, removed all the places that you could sit down and watch the world go by and generally turned the downtown area into a sterile wasteland of identical shopping malls. Slowly the city is taking its heart back. There are seats again outside Huaqiao Dasha and the Luosifen shop near Liuzhou Binguan is doing good business.

One new place to have a seat is both inside, sheltered from the worst of winter, but sort of outside too. On the 1st (ground) floor of the arcade on the corner of Longcheng Road 龙城路 and Gongyuan Road 公园路, which houses Pizza Hut, is Goka Coffee. The shop itself is small, but they have taken over the large open space in the centre of the mall with tastefully appointed tables and potted plants.

Goka (their transliteration - the Chinese is 可卡咖啡 kě kǎ kā fēi ) has a range of coffees (hot and iced) and teas as well has snacks. There is a downloadable translation of their menu here (PDF format). They have a real espresso machine and certainly know how to brew a good cup of coffee.

The shop is in 星河大厦 (xīng hé dà shà) in unit 1-25. Open from 12 noon till 2 am. Tel: 2850718

(There is an alternative entrance next to the immediate left (south) of the KFC on the pedestrian street, 解放南路 jiě fàng nán lù. The entrance looks like a small accessories shop but leads into the arcade. Goka is on the right.)

Blue Mountain Coffee

One of the most pleasant coffee bars in Liuzhou, Blue Mountain is not far from the city centre and offers a peaceful haven. A wide variety of good coffees and snacks. While the service is very good, they also have a very relaxed attitude in that they don't harass you and are happy to leave you to sip over your coffee as long as you want. The room is interesting and full of coffee related paraphernalia. Be sure to visit the risqué toilet facilities at the rear.

Blue Mountain Coffee Bar

Blue Mountain Coffee is at 228 Shuguang DongLu Shuguang Donglu See map. They have a second, smaller place on Beique road in the north of the city.

Arrow Bar

Tian Tian Jian Ba

HoegaardenThe name of this bar translates as 'every day arrow bar'. Much more than I can deal with, so 'Arrow Bar' it is. It can be found on the 16th floor of the building opposite Soho bar.

The building is huaqiao dasha ( or Hua Qiao Da Sha (Traditional) to use the traditional characters on the sign outside) which means 'Overseas Chinese Building' and is at 97 Jiefang Nanlu..

'Q' writes, "[it] isn't too cheap and it still features the regular KTV rooms, but it also serves a wide range of beers, including top-class Belgian beers such as Leffe & Duvel, British and German beers such as Bodington's Ale & Paulaner, and even my favourite beer in the world - Hoegaarden, for 20 a bottle! That's a top-class wheat beer for a good price."
